Combining two of Doddie’s greatest passions - rugby and wine - the idea for ‘Doddie'5 Red Blend’ was born. Enlisting the assistance of winemaker and former Springbok Schlak Burger and his son Tiaan, The Doddie 5 was produced at their winery Welbedacht in Wellington and consists of an appropriate blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Mourvèdre and Petit Verdot.

This is an impressive red Cape Bordeaux blend revealing very pretty, seductive aromatics of fine dried herbal spice, ripe black plums, earthy black currants, sappy cedar spice and a delicate brûléed kiss of oak. On the palate there’s creamy opulence combined with a super silky texture and a real accessibility, finessed tannins and a weightless brambly black berry fruit concentration on the finish. Youthfully exuberant and utterly delicious already, this is a fine wine with character and class… just like the man in who’s honour it was created to celebrate.
